NOAA Office of Coast Survey builds the national bathymetry to
support a mandate for navigational products as well as other NOAA
priorities, such as the New Blue Economy. To streamline the
bathymetry data pipeline and update to data driven processes,
Office of Coast Survey seeks an individual with software
development capability to apply hydrographic science business logic
throughout the software development life cycle within its
Hydrographic Systems and Technology Branch.
Primary Responsibilities of the Developer include the
The individual will work within a team to develop and apply new
technology and methods to increase the capabilities, efficiencies,
and accuracy of the current data model and workflow for the
National Bathymetric Source project within Office of Coast Survey.
The individual will be involved with all phases of automated
workflow development, including design, algorithm and software
development, testing and documentation. Some work will be performed
in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The individual will be
working with different data formats, databases, and workflows that
require significant software development.
Required Skills & Qualifications of the Developer include the
- BS in hydrography, ocean mapping, physical science, marine
science, oceanography, computer science, engineering, physics,
mathematics, related discipline, or equivalent.
- Experience with data analysis and an understanding of GIS and
data management techniques.
- Demonstrated drive to solve problems and think creatively and
- Knowledge and experience with software development, including
Python, Integrated Development Environments, debugging principles,
continuous integration testing, and automated
- Knowledge and experience with databases and queries in
- Knowledge and experience with geospatial applications, such as
QGIS, libraries, such as GDAL, and OGC web services.
- Knowledge and experience with horizontal and vertical datums as
well as transformations in the context of point and raster
- Knowledge and experience with version control best practices
and experience with version control software such as Git.
- Experience developing mapping standards and techniques, and
improving data management and access.
- Knowledge and experience with container-based software
development and deployment platforms.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
